The One Thing Every Relationship Needs Is Respect

What every relationship needs is as different as the many couples involved in relationships. However, there are several underlying characteristics that every relationship should have. One of the most important is respect. This post will focus on the role respect plays in relationships.

Everyone demands respect or gives respect in many areas of their lives. It is fair to say that everyone expects the utmost respect from their partner in a relationship. If respect is missing it can lead to unhappiness and even the end of the relationship.

In most relationship respect is equated to the love in the relationship. Each partner contributes to the level of respect in the relationship through their actions and words. These actions range from common courtesy to consideration for each others feelings and well being.

For the partners in a relationship it is important to recognize that each others need or definition for respect will be different. The partners will have to work to arrive at common ground for what works for both of them and the relationship to ensure that their needs are being met.

Traditionally, respect was defined by gender and this may still be the case for many people today. Men are looking for their partners to be respectful in the way they communicate while women are looking to be treated as equal.

The fundamental corner stone of respect is based on the golden rule “treat others the way you want to be treated” this is no different in relationships. It means being accountable and taking responsibility for ones actions. It means giving your partner the benefit of the doubt when the interpretation of something can go either way because you are secure in the fact that they mean well.

Outside of the basic fundamentals of respect, there are many other factors that contribute to respect in a relationship. The one thing that connects it all is communication. Through communication couples can define the level of or lack of respect that will work for them in their relationship or that they each need. One thing is clear, with out mutual respect there will be no relationship.
